We often hear about super foods. Real super foods don’t have to come from far away exotic countries and cost a small fortune. Today’s example can be grown in a jar on your window sill. Broccoli sprouts! They are a super food for hormone balance.

The liver is often overlooked in hormonal imbalances, but plays a key role. If we look at estrogen for example, there are 3 different forms that the liver must covert (in phase I liver detoxification) then remove (in phase II) via detoxification. The end products of phase I have a powerful effect on cancer risk and hormone balance.  This is due to the fact that they can become more volatile. Phase I in many people is more active then phase II so those estrogens may not be removed but recirculated becoming increasingly toxic.

Broccoli sprouts help pull the plug as they contain the most potent naturally occurring activators of phase II liver detoxification . It is the compound sulforaphane converted from glucoraphin (when we chew) which is abundant in brassica vegetables, particularly broccoli sprouts that give them their powerful ability to stimulate phase II. They also have an impressive range of other anti-cancer activities in the body and a quick PubMed search will show literally thousands of peer reviewed papers supporting the actions of these compounds.

High estrogen with low progesterone is common and know as estrogen dominance. Some signs of estrogen dominance include PMS, thyroid dysfunction, irregular periods, fatigue, sluggish metabolism and more.
