Vitamin D deficiency is strongly associated with higher TSH levels. It is also super important for your immune system, so this info can benefit everyone.

We are not going to get much vitamin D from the sun over the next few months in the Southern Hemisphere so asides from supplementing, what can we do?

I am not going to lie; vitamin D is probably the hardest nutrient to get via the diet, so it is ambitious of me to start this series with it! Cod liver oil is a fantastic source, but we need to consume quite a lot even to get to 1000iu. Seafood really is the best food source though and of other important thyroid nutrients like iodine.

If you don’t eat it, the highest plant-based source is mushrooms. What you will find throughout this series is that it really depends on how and where grown. Many commercial mushrooms are grown in the dark so provide very little.

There is a solution thought - pop your mushrooms on a sunny windowsill and they will create more vitamin D to defend themselves from solar radiation.

Scientists have found exposing white button mushrooms to a UV lamp for as little as 1 second skyrockets vitamin D to the point where one serving contains more than 824 per cent of the RDI.

I am focusing on food as diet really is the foundation of good health and you can’t out supplement a poor diet and lifestyle. In clinic however when working one on one people I do use supplementation to replenish nutrient deficiencies and speed up the healing process.

So what are the symptoms of Hyperthyroidism?

The guide expands on the graphic, but when you think hyper you are thinking of a general speeding up of the body's processes. These clients often present with anxiety, heart palpitations, lose bowel motions, weight loss and the shakes.

However, we need to bear in mind not everyone will experience symptoms the same. One of the main examples I can think of with Hyperthyroidism is that not everyone will be losing weight even though it is common. Some may even struggle with their weight. .

You can also swing between both Hyper and Hypothyroid symptoms which is what my body was doing. This is especially true if you have Hashimoto's which as the guide explains is the leading cause of Hypothyroidism. It is thought over 90% of those with a Hypothyroid diagnosis have Hashimoto's, yet most of the ladies I see have not had a simple antibody blood test.

The guide explains all of this and more in more detail. It makes a difference to me if you have an autoimmune thyroid condition like Hashimoto's as we treat each disorder differently and even then that is dependent on the root cause.

Please be aware that some supplements can speed up the attack on the thyroid if you have an autoimmune thyroid disorder so it is important to be clear on what is going on and that you have someone knowledgeable and experienced to guide you.

It is world thyroid day today. So I want to carry on this conversation and I will be back soon with the Hyperthyroid infographic and free "Is it your thyroid" download. Today a visual. The back pic is me when my thyroid was not ok. On the hypothyroid post yesterday when I said lines on the neck were a symptom, this is what I meant. This was how my goiter looked on the outside.

If you google goiter you are going to see some extreme versions, but you really want to intervene before you get to that stage! I was so out of touch with my body and utterly exhausted, I didn't even notice the swelling was in my thyroid gland and not inside my throat. I just knew if I lied on my back it would feel like my throat was restricted. My health was nose diving rapidly, I was only 30.

I talked about how it can be difficult to get a thyroid diagnosis sometimes. Well I saw an ENT surgeon (for chronic sinus issues) who noticed the goiter and sent me for an ultrasound. This confirmed my thyroid was enlarged and had some nodules on it. Even then I didn't really get a diagnosis. I had every symptom in the book and he wrote 'Asymptomatic Thyroiditis' on my discharge form, gave me some migraine preventers (Antidepressant's), steroids and antibiotics (which I had already been on multiple times) and basically told me there was nothing wrong with my sinuses either🤔.

This was after my GP telling me my list of symptoms were normal for a Mum :(

Yeah, nah none of that was normal.

No diagnosis basically because of 1 blood test being in the 'normal' range. The only option was to wait for it to get worse for medical intervention 🔪

So that is where my story started. I know it could have been much worse, and am really pleased the me of 10 years ago got brave and decided to seek an alternative path. I actually turned it around quite quickly once I had the right guidance.
The way I felt when my brain fog lifted was magic. A super crappy time for me ended up being the catalyst for change and what ultimately put me on the path to not only improving my own prognosis but ditching my teaching career to take the journey to becoming a Clinical Nutritionist.

Hypothyroidism is the most common of the thyroid disorders. Hypo, as the name suggests is an under active thyroid and as we have thyroid receptor's on all of our organs think along the lines of a general slowing down of the body when you consider symptoms.

Hypothyroidism happens when the thyroid either does make enough thyroid hormone, there is poor conversion of non active hormone (T4) to the active hormone (T3) or when your body is not effectively using thyroid hormone. The root cause is going to be different for different people. My job is to find it and help you correct it 🧐

While hypothyroidism can happen at any age, in any gender, it is most common in middle-aged Women and is very common. It is thought to affect at least 1 in 10 Women. It is also under-diagnosed. There are a whole lot of Women walking around having been told their thyroids are fine when they are not. and one of the main reasons is due to testing inadequacies.

My Healing journey that ultimately led me to leave my teaching career and become a Clinical Nutritionist started with an undiagnosed autoimmune thyroid condition, so I am super passionate about helping Women get to the root cause of theirs.
