Let’s change the conversation about midlife hormones.
If you’ve been told that perimenopause is a downhill slide into hormone chaos, you’re not alone.
But let me offer something different:
A reframe rooted in biology, empowerment, and a natural perimenopause perspective.
Because here’s the truth—perimenopause isn’t the end of your vibrant self.
And it doesn’t mean you’re broken, deficient, or destined to suffer.
It’s a natural transition. A hormonal recalibration.
And with the right support, it can be a powerful reset.
Let’s Clear This Up: What Perimenopause and Menopause Are Not
I hear it all the time:
“I feel like my body is falling apart.”
“Am I just estrogen-deficient now?”
“I don’t feel like myself anymore!”
These are common, stories. So let’s name what perimenopause is not, and why these myths are unhelpful and misleading.
- Menopause is Not Estrogen Deprivation or Deficiency
Your hormones are shifting—not vanishing.
Framing it as “deprivation” or a deficiency sets up the idea that something’s gone wrong, when in fact, this transition is expected and by design.
We don’t medicalise puberty—so why do it with perimenopause & menopause? Do we claim that prepubescent girls are estrogen deficient? No because it is expected.
Your body is adapting to a new rhythm, and it has clever ways of doing so.
For example, estrogen receptor sensitivity can increase, meaning your cells can respond more effectively even as levels fluctuate. And enzymes like aromatase allow your body to produce estrogen from other sources (such as fat tissue). Your body has back-up systems.
- It’s Not Hormone Poverty
This phrase I heard recently makes me cringe.
Your body isn’t lacking—it’s recalibrating and again by design.
That’s a powerful shift in perspective. You’re not running on empty—you’re evolving.
- It’s Not a Syndrome
Terms like “Female Hormone Deficiency Syndrome” are simply not helpful.
They pathologise a normal life phase.
Menopause is not a disease. It’s a rite of passage—and it deserves more reverence than fear.
- It’s Not a Problem to Fix
Just like puberty, perimenopause is a biological phase—not a mistake of living too long.
Yes, symptoms can be challenging. But that doesn’t mean you’re broken.
Instead of trying to “fix” yourself, it might be time to explore what your symptoms mean and what you can do to support your body.
Often, stress, blood sugar imbalances, or thyroid dysfunction can worsen perimenopause symptoms—especially fatigue, mood swings, low motivation, and changes in weight. These are all areas that can be explored and supported naturally with the right tools.
- It’s Not the End of You
This one’s vital.
Menopause isn’t the end of joy, vitality, or sexuality.
For many women, it marks a beginning—one with fewer masks, stronger boundaries, and deeper clarity.
And yes, there are plenty of tools to make this recalibration smoother and more supported.
What This Life Phase Is
With the right natural perimenopause support, this season can become:
- A time of recalibration
- A transition into deeper self-awareness and inner strength
- A shift that allows for rest, renewal, and realignment
- A chance to nourish yourself in a whole new way
Should we suffer through symptoms?
Absolutely not.
Let me be clear—I’m not saying you should suffer in silence. The symptoms of perimenopause can be intense and disruptive, and they deserve to be acknowledged and supported.
But lately the narrative seems to be that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is the only solution—or that we’re setting ourselves up for a myriad of health problems if we don’t pursue it right away. Basically that all women need it.
The truth is, many women move through perimenopause without it while others choose it, hopefully as one part of a broader, more holistic plan. There’s no one-size-fits-all.
What I’m advocating for is informed choice—based on your symptoms, your values, your health history, and with full knowledge and understanding of what your options are and what each choice may mean for you now and in future.
My Lived Experience
I know how disorienting it can feel.
For me, perimenopause showed up as sleepless nights, weight gain, stress intolerance and my immune system crashed. It coincided with my marriage breakdown—amplifying everything.
I had no idea it was perimenopause. I had no idea why it felt like I was spiraling.
But once I understood what was causing my symptoms, stopped fighting and started listening, I’ve found a way forward and while I am not entirely out the other side yet I am dedicated to learning all I can about perimenopause and menopause so I can help women navigate this recalibration.
